Germany’s Vibrant Capital: Berlin

The capital of Germany, Berlin, is the unique, wacky, and wonderful center of the country’s government, history, and culture. Berlin is a melting pot of international influences from Europe and beyond and has become one of the most populous cities on the continent. A trip to this German city means an exploration of important history, diverse neighborhoods, and indescribable music and art. Here are a few of the best sights to see in Berlin- for tourists and the residents who are lucky enough to enjoy them.

East Side Gallery– Take an up close and personal look at a stretch of the Berlin Wall that used to divide Germany’s two halves. The open-air exhibit sports murals painted by over 20 artists from around the world and now serves as a heritage landmark.

Brandenburg Gate– This is the iconic structure towering over the Pariser Platz of Berlin. The gate is a beautiful symbol of the reunification of East and West Germany and a prime example of neo-classical architecture.

Museum Island– Deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The Museum Island houses 5 museums: Pergamonmuseum (Pergamon Museum), Bode-Museum, Neues Museum (New Museum), Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), and Altes Museum (Old Museum). Each museum is world renowned in its own right.

Reichstag Building– Visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the building that houses German parliament. The history of the building reaches all the way back until 1894 and its creation under the German Empire.

Checkpoint Charlie– This landmark sits upon one of the busiest areas of crossing between the Eastern Western Sides of Berlin. Nearby to the site, one can also visit Checkpoint Charlie’s own museum (Mauermuseum), as well as the Freedom Memorial.

These are just some basic, but necessary sightseeing points for a trip to Berlin. The city’s historical significance is undeniable and every neighborhood offers ways to learn about and appreciate this. One could spend an entire lifetime in Berlin and never see everything. It’s a worthwhile experience to see Berlin in all of its glory, so I recommend taking a visit as soon as you can.
