Let’s go to the theatre! Hit musical ‘An American in Paris’ is at the Kennedy Center now until January 7th. Beautiful choreography by director Christopher Wheeldon coupled with delightful music from George and Ira Gershwin will make you giddy, teary-eyed and ready to dance out of your seat. Some well-known favorites from the Gershwin brothers like ‘I Got Rhythm’, and ‘ The Man I Love’ take on a new life, and fit perfectly into the storyline.
‘An American in Paris’ is the most award-winning musical of the 2015-16 Broadway season. It was adapted from a song composed by George Gershwin. Gershwin described it as a “symphonic tone poem” intended to portray the experience of an American visitor strolling around Paris, absorbing all the nuances of their French surroundings. The composition became one of Gershwin’s most famous works. The 20-minute piece premiered December 13, 1928, under the orchestration of Walter Damrosch, at Carnegie Hall.
‘An American in Paris’ the musical was adapted from the film (of the same name) also based on the composition. In the film released in 1951, three friends (A WWII veteran/ painter, a struggling concert pianist, and a French singer) struggle to find work in Paris. In their pursuit of a better life, two of the friends fall in love with the same French woman. It’s an endearing love story, full of longing and romance.
Adapting a film for the stage can be tricky, but Playwright Craig Lucas does fantastic at making the material seem relevant in today’s time. The 14-minute ballet that closes the show is a moment in which Variety Magazine described as “dreamy” and found it “hard to breathe” during it. ‘An American in Paris’ is a perfect way to start your year off on a high note, a perfect gift for someone special or a well-deserved treat for yourself. Tickets can be purchased at the Kennedy Center, and some dates have two shows!
