Visitors to Richmond, Virginia are typically drawn to the city’s wealth of museums, cozy restaurants, and incomparable art and music scenes. Each of RVA’s different neighborhoods adds a unique flavor to the city. However, Richmond is much more than a metropolitan and cultural playground. Settlement on the James River and continued efforts to create many green spaces means that the city of Richmond offers visitors and residents the best of both worlds. Check out a sampling of the best/my favorite outdoor experiences in Virginia’s capitol.
- Maymont– The hilly 100-acre public park (previously a Victorian estate) containing a mansion, petting zoo, and incredible botanical gardens. Guests can stroll through a Japanese-inspired garden, hike and climb to reach a waterfall, and gaze at the intricate stonework and historic buildings throughout the facility.
- Brown’s Island– One can explore views of the James River and the Shockoe Slip neighborhood of Richmond while taking a stroll across the walkways that lead to Brown’s Island. The park, whose infrastructure is gritty and industrial, and access includes a walk across an old pipeline. The park is situated between Belle Isle and the always popular Canal Walk.
- Belle Isle– Like its neighbor, Brown Island, Belle Isle is a nature park owned by the city. It is reachable by foot or by bike, and contains more biking and nature trails, space to both rock climb and sunbathe, and fishing spots open to all because of its wheelchair accessible quarry pond.
- James River Activities– Take a trip down on a riverboat excursion, kayaking session, or a fishing tour. One can simultaneously learn about the ecosystem of the James River and the extensive Civil War history that defines the region. Activities can cater to families with kids or adventurous adults.
RVA is the perfect blend of urban meets outdoorsy. Even while deep in the city, one can find a touch of nature to relax in and explore. A complete list of Richmond’s outdoor experiences could never be compiled into a list and that is a wonderful, unusual problem for a large city to have. I highly suggest taking a trip to central Virginia’s heart and taking full advantage of all that Richmond has to offer.
